Private practice allows patients who pay out of pocket or through private or company insurance policies the possibility to have access to scheduling appointments for visits or exams or be hospitalised with the doctor of their choice. Many private clinics, accredited or not, offer diagnosis and treatment to paying patients. Niguarda, as a large public hospital with the consequential guarantee of quality care, is even more qualified to offer these services. One may avail of private practice in all clinical specialty areas, for laboratory exams, day-hospital and same day surgery care.

> What does private practice offer?
1- Private Practice: allows for choice of the physician who renders the service.
2- Private System: allows for access to services with the guarantee of qualified personnel with greater scheduling flexibility. The individual physician cannot be chosen, and the rates are established by the hospital system.
> How does one access private practice?
Access does not require a doctor’s prescription. For patients with a health insurance policy that is recognized by the hospital, special rates apply. The policy number must be communicated at the moment of scheduling an appointment.
> Is there a special walk up window for scheduling and information?

> How does the payment must be done?
Payment should be cash or by ATM before the visit or exam. The payment will be done at the front office called “Private Area” or at every Cash Desk Point in the hospital.
> Where are visits and exams done?
Services take place in the Central Ambulatory Care Clinic (Poliambulatorio Centrale) or in the departments, depending on the type of service rendered. The place of the visit and how to arrive will be indicated by the walk up window personnel.
> If it is not possible to show up for an appointment?
The appointment can be cancelled by telephone or e-mail, preferrably within 24 hours before the scheduled appointment.
> Where can exam results be picked up?

Some exam results must be picked up where the exam was performed. At the time of the exam it is helpful to ask the personnel at the window where the result can be picked up. The result of every exam is private and can be released only to patient or to a third party with written permission and a photo I.D.
HOSPITALIZATION
The use of private practice for hospitalisation allows the patient to chose the attending physician and have access to special comfort services.
> What kinds of private practice services are available?
1. Freelance
It permits to be monitored by the doctor or by the equip chosen. Moreover, if available, you can choose for the differential lodging treatment, room with fee. With this procedure, part of the fee is in charge of the Regional Health Service according to the in force regulations.
2. Solvency
Niguarda offers a personalized procedure for the actuation of surgery intervention, with or without hospitalization.
This procedure contemplates the total payment of the costs in charge of the patient, with or without the choice of the surgeon or the surgery staff and it is planned in particular for patients with an agreement or with a private insurance. In this case costs are in charge of the agreed institution.
> How does one access private practice services?
Once hospitalization is programmed and the medical team is chosen, the patient will be contacted by the secretary or head nurse of the department. All necessary information regarding hospitalisation will be given at that time.
> How is payment made and an invoice received?
For an estimate of the cost of professional care or comfort services or for making a payment and requesting an invoice contact: private practice office.

> What if one has an health insurance policy?
If the insurance company does not have an agreement with Niguarda, one must pay for the services and ask for reimbursement from the insurance company. We suggest that the condition of coverage and reimbursement are verified before the use of services.
> How does can be received a copy of the clinical documentation?
A coy of all clinical documents can be asked for at any time from the Private Practice Office (Ufficio Libera Professione). This service is free.

> How is privacy guaranteed?
On admission, a form for permission to use personal data will be given to the patient. With this, one can indicate the names of those who are authorized to receive information about the presence of the patient in the hospital and his/her health status. Hospital policy prohibits the release of information to anyone who is not indicated in this form.
